Nowhere to run, nowhere to hide. Instead of jumping out of windows, this time around they’re jumping bail.
When they get the chance.
Arthur Nadel, 76, who has been on the lam since Jan. 16 when he threatened to kill himself and vanished, surrendered to Florida authorities January 17 in an alleged $300 million investor fraud case. [ABC]
Texas financier R. Allen Stanford is accused of cheating 50,000 customers out of $8 billion dollars but despite raids Tuesday of his financial empire in Houston, Memphis, and Tupelo, Miss., federal authorities say they do not know the current whereabouts of the CEO.
In the last decade, Stanford and his companies have spent more than $7 million on lobbyists and campaign contributions in efforts to loosen regulation of offshore banks.
Among the top recipients: Senator Bill Nelson (D-Fla.), Congressman Pete Sessions (R-Texas), Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.), Senator Chris Dodd (D-Conn.) and Senator John Cornyn (R-Texas), one of the members who took a trip to Antigua where he was entertained by Stanford.
Sen Cornyn’s office has said the trip “was strictly a fact-finding trip,” and at the time, “there was nothing untoward or unseemly” about Stanford Financial. [ABC]
So, what facts did Cornyn find, exactly? This should be public record.
When all else fails… scram!
Sam Israel, a hedge fund cheat who tried to fake his own death and spent nearly a month as a fugitive, told a judge Thursday that he really did try to commit suicide while on the run, saying he thought it would be better to do himself in than turn himself in.
Israel scammed hundreds of millions of dollars from investors. He was ordered to begin serving his sentence while he faces a new charge of failing to report to prison. [ABC]
One of those rare cases where suicide is the answer. Too much of a pussy, Israel?
Sometime one’s exit isn’t by choice:
Do Hedghogs Float?
The hedge-funder Seth Tobias was found dead in his pool. His hard-partying wife has been accused of his murder by her Internet psychic, who also says the hedge-funder was having an affair with a male stripper named Tiger. And it just gets more sordid from there. [NY Mag][Dealbreaker]
For Filomena, the fourth time was the (c)harm! (Allegedly.)
Hope is but a four letter word.
