The Double Edge Sword

This interesting bit of perspective comes from the president of Romania.

President Traian Basescu was addressing Bill Gates, who was there pimping Vista.

“[Piracy] helped Romanians improve their creative capacity in the IT industry, which has become famous around the world… ten years ago, it was an investment in Romania’s friendship with Microsoft and with Bill Gates.”

And probably did more good for that country, run into the ground by a brutal cold-war dictator, than any amount of foreign aid the US could have possibly provided- and we know where that cash winds up, in the pockets of despots and their henchmen doing ‘our’ (not my!) bidding.

Truly a free market miracle and for those wanting to spread democracy (I’m distinguishing between that and capitalism here), the best sort of unintended consequence.

Gates reportedly kept schtum.

It’s obvious to me, but the debate gets deliberately clouded (much like global warming) as it has been elevated to hot button issue, and meaningful discussion is like trying to talk to your wife after having been caught (ahem) looking.

What’s left out in the cold is that the issue about piracy in the virtual realm is a far more complex issue than copyrighters ‘with an interest’ (as in percentage) care to know. “Pay me and then we’ll talk.” Ah, were things that simple.

Subtlety and nuance, if I ever had kids that’s what I would name them.
